Events do have a long lasting story-arc, but they require players to be informed and to follow them using the web based forums. In other words, with a very few exceptions, no action perfomred by a player or guild has long lasting effects in the game. Events do happen regularly, allowing players to get involved usually, but unfortunately during the limited time interval that spawns the event itself, and are indeed an interesting aspect of the game, but the overall impact of players actions on the history and world setting is reduced, it exists, but not at a level that such an statement may imply or suggest. This can only be a good thing for Ryzom and is the reason why it won the > Best Story award.įrom another perspective, things are not as awesome. >Players setting the mood and decisions in events can bring the story to new levels and shape it into >something that the players want. The EP2 dates approximately from just before outposts. The main parts of the lore were developed before release and very little has been extended. The richness of the racial tensions has been slightly dropped towards a more bipolar faction based conflict. The lore has seen some changes during the time Ryzom has been up, and incoherences appear from time to time. This statement could be a little misleading, this particular announcement dates to a year ago (around June 2005) and little has happened since then, especially for a game whose background and story is seen as a major part of the game (just as a side note, there is a long humorous thread in our forums stating the 15 good reasons for Jena's delay). >Last year saw Tryton, (the leader of a 'rogue' faction), gathering together the most well known players to >tell them of Jena's coming to Atys >The lore and story of Ryzom has always been rich, but in the last year we've seen it develop further still. As a side effect, one may ask whether these new aditions will be adressed for the higher areas of the game as well. revamped noob island is receiving much (deserved) praise from new players as well as old ones who have created alts just to play on it. The new player experience (NPE) a.k.a Ruins of Silan a.k.a. The only two major long lasting features that some could consider as such are outposts released at the last 2005 quarter and the new player experience, released a few weeks ago - and even then, the outposts are a simplified version of what some players expected, not to mention the fact that they were announced as a feature for release. With the exception of recently released NPE, do not expect major new expansions or new world areas, new skill systems or new races. I won't consider any feature that has not been released (for they could experience delays and misbehaviors). The purpose of this post is not as much an open attack on the game, which remains a very good alternative providing lots of fun and oportunities, but to provide another view.įor the impatient: in my personal opinion, not much has changed in the almost two years that Ryzom has been live, although the game has been polished and minor bugs are being removed and the interface has been improved. Since the article was presented as a re-review and not as a preview, it's worth mentioning other aspects. There are plenty of Ryzom review who focus in the good aspects of the game, I am highlighting some areas that could be improved. I stronglt wish someone would make a real game out of Ryzom's original vision (and sadly how many times haven't we heard similar statements about MMO developers?).Ī not-so-positive alternative review, not as much for new players but for those old timers who may wonder the status of Ryzom. I will hold that Ryzom is the most beautiful MMO I've seen out there and the skill tree is very refreshing and better than all the class based games out there. Like some old SWG vets, I'd love to get the Focus beta Ryzom back with meaninful and complicated foraging, better magic soloabiltity, more casual teaming, and the many promises of dynamic content, kitin invasions, goo invasions, etc that will sadly never see the light day and get substituted for one of the poorest versions of PvP i've ever seen. The community I grew to love sadly left with those changes. A lot of people like me voted with their feet again over episode 2. where a significant number of people don't want to PvP but are forced into it to have a story impact. The vast majority of players clearly "voted with their feet" after patch 1 and since then it has never even come close to regaining the playerbase nor even tried to seriously regain lost players.Īnd the only major story changing events I've seen have been PvP.
